When I first tried the Coby MP735, I wanted to take a hammer, smash it to pieces and send it back to Coby. br /br /But I resisted that urge, studied it and now I like it. br /br /The slip-and-flip speakers are great. The device feels nice in your hand. It has a sharp little interface and it plays video and audio rather well. Put a few TV shows onto the device and you have a toy that will keep you entertained for hours during a long trip. br /br /The firmware is a bit tricky however. br /br /Unlike other players, the Coby MP735 does not create an internal database of your music collection from the metadata of the individual files. Consequently, you have to synchronize all of your music with a music manager such as MS Windows Media Player, Amarok, etc. If you do not synchronize, you can still play the files, but they will play in any random order (which is lousy if you want to listen to a full concert or album).br /br /It is also difficult to encode a video file to play on the device without the software utility that Coby distributes with the device itself. Upon closer inspection however, I discovered that Coby's AVIConverter is little more than a (copyright-infringing) front-end to MEncoder.br /br /Once I realized that MEncoder was performing the encoding, I quickly wrote a Perl script that calls out to MEncoder directly. Since then, I have been happily encoding my favorite videos and old TV shows.br /br /On the whole, it's a great player once you figure it out. br /br /If you enjoy solving problems, then the Coby MP735 will give you hours of satisfaction. br /br /But if you quickly become frustrated, then place the hammers in a secure location before sitting down with the Coby MP735. br /br /br /
